EDDIE PILLER
Eddie is the head honcho at Acid Jazz records, the label that is responsible for launching the careers of Jamiroquai, Brand New Heavies, Galliano, James Taylor Quartet, Corduroy and Mother Earth to name but a few. The label also had top five success with Goldbug's version of Led Zeppelin's Whole Lotta love complete with Pearl and Dean Sample.
As well as running a successful record label for over ten years, Eddie opened the now legendary " Bluenote" club in Hoxton, this is where the likes of The Propellerheads, The Wiseguys and Jon Carter first took to the decks, also at the Bluenote Goldie launched his infamous Metalheadz club.
Eddie kick-started his career in the music bizz during the mod revival in the early eighties, running several record labels in the process, his most successful was Countdown a subsidary of Stiff records, the label had on it's roster The Prisoners (who's organist James Taylor went onto form his own quartet and still records for Acid Jazz) and West Midlands band Makin Time who later went on to form The Charlatans.Eddie also had a cameo role in the Style Council's "Solid Bond in your Heart" video and also contributed to the Paul Weller documentary Highlights and Hang-ups.
Also (and this was good enough reason to book Eddie for Something Big!) he relaunched the career of Chicago folk/soul legend Terry Callier, Piller actually went to Chicago to track down Terry and convince him to play again after being out of the business for 15 years...
Eddie Piller interview 2001..
Which is your greatest achievement with Acid Jazz/ and your major failure.
Major failure and disappointment was definitely Mother Earth...The first two albums had set them up brilliantly and a good third one could have seen them as Oasis, but they split acrimoniously and the resulting 'You Have Been Watching' was a major disappointment to me!!
Major success? I suppose Jamiroquai, or maybe finding Terry Callier after he'd been retired incognito for fifteen years....Maybe The Brand New Heavies...Actually thinking about it, I suppose the major achievement must have been establishing the first major 'non house' club to be successful in London; Hoxton's Blue Note.
